How the calculation works

Each day equals the elapsed time between clock-in and clock-out, minus the unpaid break. Overnight shifts are supported. Overtime rules differ by location and employer, so use the threshold as a planning aid and confirm payroll rules that apply to you.

Time card calculation example

Each paid day is the elapsed time from clock-in to clock-out minus the unpaid break. If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the calculator treats the shift as ending the next day.

Formula and example

A 9:00 AM–5:30 PM shift with a 30-minute unpaid break equals 8 paid hours. Five identical days total 40 hours; with a 40-hour threshold, regular hours are 40 and overtime is 0.

Important limitation

The threshold is a planning setting, not a determination of legal overtime or wages. Daily overtime, split shifts, paid breaks, rounding rules, holidays and local labor law are not automatically applied. Confirm the rules used by the employer or payroll provider.
