How to estimate reading and speaking time
The calculator divides the word count by the selected pace. It uses 238 words per minute for average silent reading, 130 wpm for a clear presentation and 100 wpm for a slower voice-over.
Formula and example
- Estimated minutes = word count ÷ words per minute
- 750 words at 238 wpm ≈ 3 minutes 9 seconds
- 750 words at 130 wpm ≈ 5 minutes 46 seconds
- 750 words at 100 wpm = 7 minutes 30 seconds
Use the result carefully
Headings, numbers, unfamiliar names, emphasis and audience interaction can slow delivery. Rehearse the final script aloud and add time for pauses, slide changes, demonstrations and questions.
