How salary and hourly pay are converted
The calculator first converts your input to an annual amount, then divides it across the schedule you entered.
- Salary to hourly:
annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks) - Hourly to salary:
hourly pay × hours per week × paid weeks - Biweekly pay:
annual salary ÷ (paid weeks ÷ 2)
Worked salary-to-hourly example
A $52,000 annual salary over 40 hours per week and 52 paid weeks converts to $25 per hour. The same annual amount is $4,333.33 per average month, $2,000 per biweekly paycheck and $1,000 per week before deductions.
Paid weeks change the result
Use 52 paid weeks when paid vacation and holidays are included in salary. If an hourly or contract worker is paid for only 48 weeks, dividing the same annual income by fewer working hours produces a higher effective hourly rate. Keep paid weeks and working weeks conceptually separate.
Gross pay is not take-home pay
These conversions compare gross compensation only. Taxes, insurance, retirement contributions, unpaid leave, overtime, bonuses and benefits can make two jobs with the same converted rate financially different.
“Twice monthly” means 24 paychecks per year. It is not the same as biweekly pay, which produces 26 paychecks when using 52 paid weeks. Actual payroll may differ because of local laws, pay calendars, overtime rules, taxes and employer policies.
