How selling fees and profit are calculated
Percentage fees apply to the item price plus shipping charged to the buyer. Payment fees also include the fixed transaction fee. Profit equals customer payment minus item cost, shipping cost, advertising cost and all entered fees.
The break-even item price solves for the price where profit is zero after percentage and fixed fees. Listing fees, taxes, refunds, currency conversion, subscriptions and category-specific charges only affect the estimate if you include them in an input.
Worked marketplace fee example
Suppose a buyer pays $55 for a $50 item plus $5 shipping. A 12% marketplace fee is $6.60. A 3% payment fee plus a $0.30 fixed charge adds $1.95. If the product costs $20, fulfillment shipping costs $7 and advertising costs $5, estimated profit is $13.45 before any unentered taxes or overhead.
Fees sellers commonly overlook
Check whether the platform charges its percentage on shipping, tax or the whole buyer payment. Include per-listing charges, promoted-listing fees, payment minimums, refund administration fees, currency conversion and monthly subscriptions when they apply to the order or period.
Compare platforms using net profit
A lower headline fee does not always create more profit. One marketplace may bring a higher selling price or lower advertising cost. Enter the same product cost and fulfillment assumptions for each channel, then compare profit per order and the break-even item price.
Platforms change fee schedules. Confirm current rates and which parts of the order are fee-bearing before pricing a product.
